Talk to Oneself
Can an emotion become a drawing—and can that drawing become a conversation with ourselves?

A conversation with the self
Beginning with spontaneous drawings made in a state of absorption, I explored how line, colour and rhythm might communicate emotion. The work developed from individual painted units into a visual diary, a moving image and a series of projection experiments.
I grouped twenty initial visual units around five emotions and used feedback to test how they were read. Facial and wall projection studies led to an interactive 'conversation machine': Kinect and TouchDesigner transform a participant’s silhouette, delaying its movement so the body leaves a visible trace.
The most compelling encounter was with the delayed body—a familiar image that seemed able to answer back. Touch, movement and simple visual feedback offered an accessible route into the work.
